A recent New York Times article described how the beauty and skin care industry is increasingly using ingredients found in the supermarket produce aisle, especially for preventing eye wrinkles and other signs of aging. Fruits and vegetables that are high in vitamins and antioxidants, such as spinach, carrots and apples, are being used more frequently as ingredients in anti aging products. Rather than using the natural products in their food grade form, they are formulated into cosmetic-grade ingredients so that they can penetrate the skin. One particularly interesting point is that capsaicin, the chemical that gives chili peppers their heat, may help in reducing the appearance of wrinkles. While many natural ingredients are proven to be successful anti aging properties, I would be hesitant to use any products containing chili peppers around my eyes.
